The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
Democrats deliver for Arizona students, while Republicans continue to spew conspiracy theories
The Good:
Last week House Assistant Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Gutierrez sponsored HB2213 a bill to provide free school lunches to students. The bill passed out of committee with a 9-3 vote. The 3 no votes were Rep. Lisa Fink in LD27, Rep. David Marshall in LD7, and Rep. Justin Olson in LD10.
The Bad:
One thing we can always count on with Republicans being in charge is them spreading conspiracy theories. Republican Representative Lisa Fink introduced a bill labeled "geoengineering" (HB2056) that focused on cloud seeding. However, it was also an attempt to legitimize absurd conspiracy theories about chemtrails.
The Ugly:
Republicans are continuing to bring back legislation that the governor has vetoed in previous years including two anti-trans bills targeting students.
SB1002, sponsored by John Kavanagh (R-3), would ban teachers from using a student’s chosen pronouns without written parental permission
SB1003, sponsored by John Kavanagh (R-3), would ban trans kids from using the school bathrooms, changing facilities and “sleeping quarters” that align with their gender identities
Bills we are watching this week:
SB1256 seeks to prohibit the use of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in state employment practices.
HB2216 “Positive Alternatives for Pregnancy and Parenting Grant Program” within the Department of Health Services. The primary objective of this program is to develop a statewide initiative that promotes alternatives to abortion services at no cost to clients.
HB2440: prohibit the Attorney General from prosecuting or initiating civil actions against county board of supervisors or other county officers concerning their official duties related to election certification.
HB2651: Voting equipment must be manufactured in the U.S
