Release: Legislative Democratic Candidates and Leadership Denounce Verdict Out of Pima County

This draconian law has no place in modern society

PHOENIX, AZ – Legislative Democrats denounced Pima County Superior Court Judge Kellie Johnson’s ruling today to end the injunction halting enforcement of a 1901 law banning nearly all abortions. A recent poll found that a huge 68% majority of Arizonans oppose the law.

“As someone who made the decision to choose abortion, I know just how critical it is that Arizona women have the freedom to decide what's best for them and their families. This law strips away those exact freedoms and would have criminalized the decision that was medically best for me. Republican leadership fought to reinstate this law, and they wrote their own version. Democrats are fighting for choice this November, and when we take the majority we’re going to work to overturn this terrible law,” said Legislative District 9 Senate Nominee Eva Burch.

“As a clinic escort for patients seeking healthcare, I’ve met many who needed an abortion. Abortions are necessary for many reasons, and no reason is frivolous. Nor are those reasons the business of politicians. The fundamental right to an abortion is supported by the majority of Arizonans but the Republicans want to remove that choice. I’m running to give abortion rights back to Arizonans,” said Legislative District 13 Senate Nominee Cindy Hans.

“This law is a travesty. Arizonans have made it abundantly clear: They support access to abortion and reproductive healthcare. They support making their own reproductive choices. Republicans continue to force unpopular and harmful policies upon Arizona families. They fought for this, and they forced through their own version. They are stopping at nothing to control the lives of women and families. This November, I am confident that voters will demand a new vision for Arizona at the ballot box.” said Assistant Minority Leader Representative Jen Longdon, ADLCC Board Chair.
