Matt Gress’ Not So Common Sense Stances
Since when does common sense mean restricting abortion access and allowing guns on school grounds?
Phoenix, Ariz — Republican State House candidate for Legislative District 4, Matt Gress claims he’s “fighting for common sense.” It’s even in big, bold letters on the front page of his website. Yet, his voting record and the list of harmful bills he’s sponsored demonstrate that’s not true. Here are five times Gress’s “common sense” has been out of touch.
On abortion, Gress celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade. He introduced five fetal personhood bills. And he voted no on the Right to Contraception Act, which would protect access to IVF and contraception.
He voted for bills that attack transgender Arizonans.
He voted not once, not twice, not thrice, but four times to undermine Arizona’s water future.
He voted for bills that would make it harder to stay on the Active Early Voter List.
He voted to allow guns on school campuses and to require students take NRA firearm training classes.
But Gress’ lack of common sense isn’t just limited to his time in the legislature. It extends to the organizations that he has been endorsed by:
He has been endorsed by the Center for Arizona Policy, an organization that opposes abortion and supported the 1864 total abortion ban. They have previously opposed nondiscrimination ordinances protecting LGBTQ+ Arizonans.
He has the endorsement of the National Rifle Association.
He has the endorsement of the Arizona Free Enterprise Club which opposes efforts to support Maricopa County’s infrastructure and the Arizona Commerce Authority.
Gress’ brand of “common sense” leadership is not what LD4 residents need or deserve.
By comparison, Democratic candidates Kelli Butler and Karen Gresham will always stand up for common sense laws. They have long supported reproductive freedom. They are strong supporters of common sense gun safety measures, protecting LGBTQ+ Arizonans, and securing a sustainable water supply.
