ICYMI: Wonder Woman Speaks Out Against Sister, Arizona Republican Pamela Carter, and Endorses Opposing Democrats

Biblical eating habits,” “God’s media army,” “...no on any abortion,” new article exposes LD4 Republican candidate’s concerning background

Phoenix, Ariz. – Yesterday, a new bombshell report outlined the many controversial ties that Pamela Carter, a Republican state house candidate for Legislative District 4, has been involved in. Carter, who at one point wanted to be an “intercessor,” otherwise known as an “activist prayer warrior,” is running alongside incumbent Matt Gress and senate candidate Carine Werner to represent LD4 in the state legislature this November.

Mother Jones uncovered that Pamela had:

Ties to Christian nationalist movement: Pamela Carter claimed she was part of “God’s media army,” a term often used by proponents of a Christian nationalist movement sometimes called the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR):

  • “In response to a candidate questionnaire from the city of Scottsdale two years ago, Carter said she had “been involved…as a volunteer” with three churches or organizations, all of which had ties to the NAR. They included Intercessors for America, a national prayer organization that warns that “there is an Enemy of our souls and our nation who orchestrates a coordinated battle plan that is discernible and beatable with spiritual weapons.”

Mixed religion and revenue: While running on her business acumen, Pamela has been tied to a shuttered gym, a pyramid sales company, and was once a Christian wellness influencer:

  • Claimed “it was the largest [gym] in the nation at the time,” when discussing the gym she owned in the 1970s. The gym later filed for bankruptcy in 1982.

  • Launched Ravished Heart Communications Ministries International, which sold a tape that included a “one-hour prayer session” in which Carter “prays for you to be set free from [food] addiction.”

  • Did “nutritional sales” for Mannatech, a multi-level marketing company with deep links to the Christian Right. In 2007, then-Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott sued the company, alleging “unlawful, misleading sales practices.”

Resume red flags: Pamela has painted an inconsistent account of her educational background, for example:

  • “Her campaign website during her unsuccessful 2022 campaign for Scottsdale city council said she held a “Master’s Degree in Business and Communications,” a claim she also repeated that year in an interview on a local podcast. In another video that year, she boasted of having a “master’s degree in theology, as well as in mass communications.” A current campaign biography states that “I received my master’s degree in Communications and Biblical studies.”

  • She attended an unspecified bible college in Kansas City, Missouri, and later received a master’s degree in “communications and media studies” from the Primus University of Theology, a Phoenix-based institution that affirms in its mission statement that “life begins at conception.” ( One of the prerequisites for admission is that you order a copy of the founder’s book.) Primus, which aims to prepare its students “for their Ministry calling,” is not accredited by any agency recognized by the Department of Education.”

Legislative District 4 is one of Arizona’s most competitive districts. Covering parts of Phoenix, Paradise Valley, and Scottsdale. In the same article, actress and singer Lynda Carter, Pamela Carter’s younger sister, stated, “I have known Pam my entire life, which is why I sadly cannot endorse her for this or any public office.” Lynda Carter endorsed the Democratic candidates, Kelli Butler and Karen Gresham, for LD4’s state house.

Democratic candidate for the House Kelli Butler responded on X saying:

“Troubling to learn about my #LD4 opponent’s very extreme views & questionable background. It’s also incredibly concerning to see Pamela Carter’s running mate, Matt Gress, supporting her & promoting her candidacy to voters.”

Democratic candidate for the House Karen Gresham responded on X saying:

“Thrilled to be endorsed by #Arizona’s Lynda Carter! Her sister’s extreme views on reproductive rights are troubling as is the support of her campaign by her running mate, Matt Gress. Vote for  @KelliButlerAZ  & me in #LD4. We’ll protect our reproductive freedoms in the State House.”
