The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
Democrats protect Arizonans while Republicans continue to attack vulnerable communties
The Good:
This week a court permanently blocked Arizona’s 15-week abortion ban from taking effect. This comes after Arizonans overwhelmingly voted yes on prop139 adding abortion rights into the state constitution last November.Despite this Republicans in the state legislature continue their attacks on our reproductive freedoms. These efforts are being led by MAGA Republicans like Rep. Rachel Keshel, who continue to push unconstitutional restrictions on abortion in violation of Prop. 139.
The Bad:
Republicans continue to move HB2062 through the legislative process. This bill would define biological sex as male or female, based on reproductive traits, and excludes gender identity. After passing out of the House on a party line vote it has now made it out of the Senate Government committee.
The Ugly:
Arizona Republicans are once again following in Trump's footsteps and moving a bill that would ban DEI in Arizona. HCR2042, sponsored by House Speaker Steve Montenegro, would ask voters in 2026 to strengthen prohibitions on “preferential treatment and discrimination based on race or ethnicity in public education, hiring, and contracting.” Montenegro’s bill follows Trump’s executive orders banning diversity, equity, and inclusion from the federal government, eliminating positions that promote DEI and programs to facilitate it, and threatening to withhold federal funding to schools that continue the programs.
