PRESS RELEASE: Senator Shawnna Bolick's Consistent Advocacy Against Abortion Access — A Comprehensive Timeline
Phoenix, Ariz. – Senator Shawnna Bolick can’t hide her long history of opposing access to abortion. During her time as a lawmaker, Bolick has made several attempts to chip away at Arizonans’ abortion access, including:
In 2021, then-Representative Bolick co-sponsored a bill that would charge women with murder for having an abortion. In addition, the bill could classify non-oral contraceptives as abortions.
That same year, she also signed onto an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. She called a 15-week abortion ban “common sense” and later was one of 17 co-sponsors of Arizona’s 15-week abortion ban. It was this bill and the overturning of Roe v. Wade, that paved the way for the Arizona Supreme Court to rule that the 1864 near total abortion ban could be upheld.
This year, Shawnna Bolick signed a pledge from Right to Life encouraging Arizonans not to sign the Arizonans for Abortion Access initiative, a citizen-led measure that would restore access to abortion. She also read a proclamation from the Senate floor encouraging Arizonans not to sign the initiative and voted against allowing the Right to Contraception Act to have a vote.
Meanwhile, Representative Judy Schwiebert, the Democratic Senate nominee, has proudly stood up for Arizonans reproductive rights. She voted against the 15-week abortion ban, carried the Arizonans for Abortion Access petition, and published an op-ed highlighting her family’s personal abortion story.
Bolick is running for re-election to the Senate in LD2, which is expected to be one of the most competitive districts this November and could decide if Democrats take control of the legislature for the first time in six decades.
