PRESS RELEASE: Arizona Democrats Celebrate Women’s Equality Day
Arizona has the second largest share of women in the state legislature
ARIZONA – Today, Arizona Democrats are celebrating Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the anniversary of women earning the right to vote. Arizona has always led the way on equality – prior to the ratification of the 19th amendment, Arizona was one of 15 states with universal suffrage.
Today, Arizona has the second largest share of women in the state legislature. 20 of the 29 Democratic members of the State House are women. In the Senate, 11 of the 14 Democrats are women. This year, Arizona Democrats are running 12 women in Arizona’s most competitive legislative districts:
Judy Schweibert (Senate, LD2)
Stephanie Simacek (House, LD2)
Christine Marsh (Senate, LD4)
Kelli Butler (House, LD4)
Karen Gresham (House, LD4)
Lorena Austin (House, LD9)
Eva Burch (Senate, LD9)
Brandy Reese (House, LD13)
Sharon Winters (Senate, LD13)
Stacey Seaman (House, LD16)
Mariana Sandoval (House, LD23)
Deborah Howard (House, LD27)
“Arizona has elected powerful Democratic women to lead and we hope to continue this trend this year, especially as access to reproductive healthcare remains under attack,” said ADLCC Chair Senator Priya Sundareshan. “Arizona Democratic women have been leading the way in defending Arizonans' freedoms and we will continue to work to achieve full equality under the law.”
