Release: Halfhearted GOP Plan That Will Gouge Arizonans With A Pre-Existing Condition, Advances

AZMirror: Sen. J. D. Mesnard states “It doesn’t seek to solve all problems”

“The plan fails to require insurance companies to cover Essential Health Benefits, including emergency room and prescription drug coverage”

PHOENIX  Wednesday, House Republicans passed SB1397, a watered-down preexisting conditions bill, with vehement objections from House Democrats. SB1397 is a halfhearted effort to address the concerns of the 2.8 million Arizonans who have preexisting conditions and will lose coverage if Republican Attorney General Mark Brnovich is successful at the repeal of the ACA.

This last-ditch effort by Republicans would allow predatory insurance companies to jack up prices on Arizonans with pre-existing health conditions and would not require insurance companies to cover the 10 essential benefits covered under the ACA; including maternity, emergency room, and prescription drug coverage.

Once again Sen. Mesnard admitted SB1397 bill is not intended to “solve all problems.”Further, House Republicans shut down debate on the floor and prohibited a Democratic amendment that would solve the problems in the bill and protect Arizonans.

“Mesnard has admitted at every turn that SB1397 will not fully protect the 2.8 million Arizonans with preexisting conditions if their lawsuit is successful. Arizonans need true protection from predatory insurance companies now more than ever — It is unconscionable that Republicans like Mesnard would spearhead this bill during a global pandemic, said Murphy Bannerman Arizona DLCC Communications Director.

Earlier this legislative session Democrats introduced SB1599 which would cover preexisting conditions, prevent insurance companies from price gouging, and would require insurance companies to cover the 10 essential benefits covered under the ACA, including maternity, emergency room, and prescription drug coverage.
