Arizona Democrats are fighting for Women in 2018

We are only a few days away from the start of the 2018 Legislative Session. This session will be kicked off with several rallies and marches at the start of the session by grassroots groups and established non-profits, pushing for progress and change at the legislature.

One of these rallies stands out in particular, as it is being led by Rep. Pamela Powers Hannley of Legislative District 9 located in Southern Arizona. Rep. Powers Hannley has pushed for progressive legislation since being elected into office. One of those fights will continue into the 2018 session. Last session, Rep. Powers Hannley called for a vote on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), however, house speaker JD Mesnar used a procedural move that was largely seen as a way to avoid voting on the bill.

The new session begins on the heels of what has been dubbed the "Year of the Women," 2017 brought such movements as the Women's March, the #metoo movement, and a resurgence in civic participation. These movements have played out in Arizona politics as well, with a sexual harassment investigation underway against Rep. Don Shooter of Legislative District 13. At the start of the opening session, Rep. Powers Hannley will introduce the ERA along with a rally at the Capitol starting at 9am.

Only two states are needed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, which would ensure equal pay for women and equal protection under the constitution.
