Representative Judy Schwiebert’s Statement on Senator Shawnna Bolick’s Clear Conflict of Interest, Previous Vote in Favor of Protecting Justice Clint Bolick.

Phoenix - Yesterday, SCR1044 passed the Arizona State House of Representatives and State Senate on party-line votes. The resolution would end judicial retention elections in Arizona and retroactively protect two justices who have faced public outcry for their ruling to enforce the 1864 abortion ban, including Justice Clint Block, the husband of a sitting member of the Arizona State Senate. SCR1044 will now be sent to the Arizona Secretary of State to be placed on the ballot.

“Our democracy is founded on the principle that our leaders serve the people, not their own interests,” said Representative Judy Schwiebert. “My Senate seatmate violated the public's trust and demonstrated a clear conflict of interest when she cast a vote to protect her husband's seat on the Arizona Supreme Court by voting YES on SCR1044.

“Senator Bolick’s blatant disregard for ethical standards is not just a conflict of interest, violation of our principles, but a betrayal of the voters' confidence. When personal connections and financial benefits are placed ahead of the common good, it undermines the very foundation of our government. LD2 and Arizona deserve leaders who are committed to fairness, transparency, and accountability.”
